Pennsylvania became the second state to ratify the U.S. Constitution on December 12, 1787. Before the Commonwealth was settled by Europeans, it was part of Delaware and was home to the Susquehannock, Iroquois, Eriez, Shawnee, and other Native American tribes. .Pennsylvania has been known as the Keystone State since 1803 based in part upon its central location among the original Thirteen Colonies.
