How Did Oral Lees Efforts Improve the Lives of Inner City Students?
Oral Lee challenged students by demanding their very best efforts and they respected her and responded to her faith in them. They delivered the grades, knowing that “Mama Brown” would be there to help buy a prom dress or a pair of shoes, or deal with relationships issues or drug-addiction at home. They confided in her, relied on her, and believed in her when she offered the promise of an education and a better life away from Oakland’s inner city problems. Ms. Brown continues to financially support future education and mentor students, meeting with their parents on a regular basis. She sponsors an annual Scholarship Gala to celebrate the graduation of the Oral Lee Brown Foundation scholarship students. Nineteen of the original twenty-three students have graduated from high school and are currently enrolled in college.
