How did my cat get fleas????
Fleas can arrive in the home a variety of ways. Other animals outside can drop flea eggs and they can migrate or be tracked in by humans or animals. The bad news is that adult fleas are only about 5% of the total population! So, you will have to treat the home, yard, and animal to make sure you get rid of fleas. Your kitten is old enough for something like Advantage. Don’t use over the counter flea products due to the severe reactions many animals are suffering from (under investigation right now). There are some home remedies that work and others that don’t. Apple cider vinegar Spray (50% water and 50% vinegar) is something you can use but a bath in regular pet shampoo (NOT dish soap, NOT pesticide “flea” shampoo) for about 15 minutes will kill the fleas and remove the other eggs. Daily use of a flea comb is another safe method. I’ve listed a few websites for you to get solid information from. There is a new series on YouTube.Com that you might like too.
Even inside cats can possibly get fleas. A flea or flea egg could have crawled under the door or through a crack, could have stuck on your shoe or clothing, could have stuck on someone else who came into your house. It’s impossible to be 100% safe from fleas. If there is one there could be more, and I suggest using a good flea treatment (I use FrontLine spray) on your kitty, and then vacuum your house really good. Also machine wash or wipe down anything that your cat has been on. After that I wouldn’t worry about it unless you start seeing more fleas or signs of fleas. If you’re really worried you could flea bomb the place but I don’t like to do that except as a last resort for a bad infestation.
It might have got fleas from its mother , who knows. These are really easy to get rid of.Your vet will give you some little phials and you just put it in the fur at the neck and they are protected from fleas. These can also be bought at Sainsburys, about £7 for one which lasts 3 months look for Bob Martins pet stuff in the Pet aisle .Problem solved !
People can carry fleas on their clothes and brought them into your house. So you could have brought them in with out realising. I find the best solution is a spray which is easily apply-able over furniture and carpet etc. If you go to your vet and get some Front-line or Advocate – small pipit of fluid for the back of the animals neck, if you don’t want to treat her for ever then at least get 3-4 months supply now rather than just a month to be sure you have no eggs hanging around in carpets etc.- but of course in the future they could still come back. We treat ours each month on the back of the neck. Lastly a a cat comb, but be warned the little blighters are quick to jump away and cannot easily be crushed, a glass of warm water is handy to have to put the fleas in and drown them as you comb them out.
