How did Microsoft, the University of Trento, and the Italian government come together to start CoSBi?
The partnership with Microsoft was started by preliminary interactions between Microsoft’s current chief research and strategy officer, Craig Mundie, and a previous collaboration on programming languages with Microsoft principal investigator Luca Cardelli. These discussions lead to CoSBi, which is supported by the Trento local government and the Italian national government. On a day-to-day basis, this collaboration allows us to mix the practices of a public organization, like the University of Trento, and a company, such as Microsoft, choosing the best way to solve a problem at a given time. We follow a very pragmatic approach that aims to limit bureaucracy, maximize time for research, and overall maintain research of exceptional quality.
