Marriage seems to have existed as long as humans have in one form or another, and even in primitive tribes they usually have some kind of ritual associated with marriage. The men answering above, who say that men just grabbed any women they fancied, are just fantasising. We can imagine (though we can’t prove) that marriage rituals in ancient primitive societies would have been similar to those in surviving primitive societies today. Even the most primitive tribes normally have some kind of ritual or ceremony to mark a marriage. Typically, there is an exchange of gifts between the families of the bride and groom,and some kind of ceremony to mark the transfer of the wife to the husband’s home (or sometimes, in matrilinear societies, the husband to the wife’s home).
