How did medieval monarchs keep control?
This significant unit explores the nature of medieval monarchy and some of the challenges the monarchs faced. Coherence across the unit is achieved by using monarchy as an overarching theme. Case studies about individual monarchs enable the pupils to investigate aspects of government in different periods. The pupils begin the unit with an assessment test on chronology. A study of the Battle of Hastings follows, with discussions about who had the right to the throne. The pupils then spend one lesson following web-based activities on Hastings. An ICT assessment test follows, where the pupils have to organise, select and communicate the key events of the battle. The pupils then study the aftermath of the battle, how William kept control and what the English people thought of it all. Three lessons are spent on a CS challenge, based on Chepstow Castle: what can a castle’s story tell us about medieval people, power and control? The pupils develop understanding of the role of medieval monarch
