How did Maria Mitchell become an astronomer?
She became a librarian and continued her observational activities. In 1847, Ms. Mitchell discovered a comet. This brought her a prize, world wide recognition, and a “way in” to astronomical work. Admission to scientific organizations followed, and eventually she became Vassar College’s professor of astronomy.
