How did Kelly McGillis become part of the film? How did you sell her on The Innkeepers?
She’d done a film with Peter (Stakeland) a couple of months ago. And she was in London doing a play, so I just Skyped with her and told her about the film and she wanted to do it. It was a weird situation that Peter brought it up and I thought it was interesting but I definitely hadn’t thought of her from the beginning. One of the things that I notice about your films is that they’re very focused – small casts, limited sets. Is that a deliberate choice or just the nature of independent filmmaking? It’s a little bit of both. When you’re making a low-budget movie I think the only way to do it well is to be aware of your resources. So you can’t do a low-budget movie with a ton of people in it because it becomes too expensive. So with this movie it feels like we kind of hooked up and it’s a small movie about two people because it’s a low budget movie it’s that’s also because it’s what the movie is. It really wouldn’t exist if it wasn’t a low-budget movie, so it’s not like it was a movie id
