In the city of St. Pierre in the island of Martinique in the Caribbean Sea, Mount Pelee a volcano began to erupt in 1902. Torrents of volcanic eruptions destroyed St. Pierre – the city in three minutes flat. The prisoner was the lone survivor of this disaster.
