How did Jackson Pollock die?
One summer night in 1956, Jackson Pollock careened his convertible into a tree. His body flew out into the Long Island forest; he died instantly. A young woman, who had met him only a few hours earlier, was also killed. She was a friend of another passenger, Ruth Kligman, who was hospitalized for months by grievous injuries. Edith Metzger, also was killed in the accident, which occurred less than a mile from Pollock’s home. The other passenger, Pollock’s girlfriend Ruth Kligman, survived. After Pollock’s death at the age of 44, his wife, Lee Krasner, managed his estate and ensured that Pollock’s reputation remained strong despite changing art-world trends.
