How did it come about the superstition about touching wood?

0

People believed that fairies used to live in the wood. So if you said something and there was wood nearby, the fairies would try to make sure that nothing worked out for you. So you would knock on wood to get the fairies out of the wood. In this cause, “She could die soon,” so you’d knock on wood to stop the fairies from killing her. Yeesh, that’s terrible. (by the by, in the US the expression is “knock on wood,” in case you can’t tell by my explanation.
