How did Howard Carters discovery of King Tuts tomb impact archaeology, Hollywood movies, books, and society?
Well, some of his activities, and those of his patron Lord Carnarvon, certainly caused a cracking down on the supervision of archaeological activities within Egypt. It did not impact Archaeology per se. It impacted that body of knowledge regarding 18th dynasty burials of royal persons in Egypt, including, but not limited to, the dimensions and design of even a tomb of an insignificant and short-lived pharaoh. As to Hollywood and books? It gave them a silly shortened name to call some little known pharaoh by as if he were their best friend? It provided some focal point for invention? Such as the way that people insist on mentioning King Tutankhamon and Nefertiti together – as if they were a pair. As to society – it has allowed them to feel as if they are very knowledgeable regarding a subject matter that is way more in-depth and complex than 90% of the people seem to be able to imagine.
