How did Hitler become the Chancellor and the Fuhrer of Germany?
Hitler had to build up the representation of the Nazis in the Reichstag. In the Elections of March 1933, Hitler recieved more seats in the Reichstag, and with allied Center and Nationalist Parties, he get control of more than 50% of the Reichstag. He passes the Enabling Act, which allows him to make laws without consulting the government. This made Hitler a dictator. The Night of the Long Knives (1934), Hitler has 400 of his rivals killed, including Ernst Rohm, who was the head of the SA (a.k.a. the Brownshirts). After the death of the German president Hindenburg, Hitler declares himself the Fuhrer, or the supreme ruler combining the powers of the President and the Chancellor. He has the entire army swear personal loyalty to him.
