How did Hideki Tojo come to powerand what were his goals?
Tojo came from a military family and was considered a very able general. He was well known for having a sharp and quick mind. Even though the Emperor was a pacifist, Tojo protected him against internal attacks. Tojo believed strongly in strong alliances with Germany and Italy. He argued strongly against the West’s argument that Japan should back out of China and Indonesia. This ultimately lead to an offensive war against the Allies. He shared responsibility for the ruthless murder of 8 million civilians as part of Japanese expansion. These were not collateral damage or strategic targets but purges of individuals for ethnic and racial cleansing. After the War, he unsuccessfully attempted suicide. The International Military Tribunal found him guilty of war crimes and hung him.
