The victim was James Vellanti, of Clinton, Hunterdon County, said a man who answered Vellanti’s home telephone Sunday evening. He declined to give further information. Karen MacDonald, spokeswoman for Taubman Centers Inc., which owns a majority of the Pier, said in an e-mail that the Atlantic City Police Department’s investigation is in the early going. Vellanti, who served as chief operating officer for the New York-based hedge fund JNF Asset Management, was declared dead after falling from an escalator at The Pier Shops at Caesars. The shops are connected to the casino by a sky-bridge and an escalator. He is the second man to lose his life after falling from the structure. Frank Gilbert Jr. fell after sitting on the escalator’s handrail on Aug. 9, 2008.
