How did Hampton Roads develop such a hot fashion scene?
Just as with the music scene here, the fashion scene is influenced by people who come from all over the place, and people with radically different style tastes. In New York or Washington, D.C., you’re apt to see all the kids of a certain segment rocking the same things – New Balance sneakers, North Face coats, etc. In Hampton Roads, though, stylish kids kind of do their own things and are less likely to be locked into a rigid look. So you have hip-hop kids, skaters, Goths, surfers, all sort of borrowing from each other. Just as with the music, there is no look that screams “Virginia!” – which makes our growing local fashion industry unique and really versatile.
