The Greeks invented democracy, the rule of the people by the people. Romans created much of the legal system as we know it, as well as the concept of a Senate, each senator representing many voters. Judaism (specifically the laws of Moses) forms much of our legal background. In other words, murder is murder because Judaic law says so. Early Christians lived in communities where everyone had a voice. Also, the Christian ethic frowns on slavery and promotes free will, both important aspects of democracy. Obviously, this is a topic that could be researched for days, but these are some basics. Good luck.
