Siddhartha Gautama achieved enlightenment by meditating under a Pipal (Bodhi) tree for 49 days, he rejected suffering and desire and reached enlightenment on the rise of the full moon, the story is fantastic: it goes that in his mind he was tempted and attacked many times by Mara, the lord of ego and illusion, but he defeated Mara in the end, freeing himself from ego, delusion and desire he became the Buddha, or enlightened one.
