How did Fred manage to seduce Edie, given the social taboos of the time?
A. She was a woman who put her own feelings first. Fred was the one who early on really did sweep her off her feet. At that stage I don’t think that she’d thought about him in a romantic way, but suddenly it fulfilled all her fantasies. It seems clear that her desires were strong enough to overcome the social taboos. I was intrigued about what women knew about their own sexuality and I think she was interested in that. Q. Can you explain the relationship between the two sisters? A. Although Avis and Freddy were seeing each other in a casual way, it seems obvious that it was never a serious relationship. I think Avis quickly realised that he didn’t fancy her in that way. I don’t think she understood what Edie had that she didn’t, but she knew hers was a more chaste friendship. My sense of her loyalty to Edie was born out in the interview I heard where it was plain that she really did love and admire her sister. There is one photo of all four them on holiday in Shanklin and a year later,
