How did Florence make things better?
The activities in this section help extend childrens understanding of the improvements Florence Nightingale helped to make and to give a sense of degrees of importance to these developments. QCA suggests: ‘Divide the children into groups. Give each group five or six statements about things Florence Nightingale did to improve life for nurses and soldiers in the hospital at Scutari. Ask them to select the three statements they think are the most important and talk about why they have chosen these.’ This is the first activity in this section and has been developed to make best use of ICT. The next activity lets children consider the consequences of each of the major improvements by asking them to match sentence sections.
