How did FBLA get started?
In 1938, Hamden L. Forkner proposed to the National Council for Business Education that they should adopt an organization for business education students. On February 3, 1942, the first FBLA chapter was organized in Johnson City, Tennessee. Thirty-nine chapters had joined by the end of 1942. In 1958, our postsecondary organization, Phi Beta Lambda (PBL), was established. On February 10, 1942, the first PBL chapter was chartered at the State College of Iowa, now called the University of Northern Iowa. Both organizations chose independent status in 1969 with their own headquarters and Board of Directors. The National Headquarters are located at 1912 Association Drive, Reston, Virginia, 22091-1591. In 1978, a professional division was created and was named the Alumni Division. In July 1989, this division changed its name to the Professional Division.
