How did Elizabeth deal with Mary Queen of Scotts?
Initially, she kept her in close confinement, albeit in the form of a comfortable house arrest. However, whether or not Mary was aware of, or wanted it,she became the central focus of several Catholic plots,both in England and abroad,that wanted to place her on the English throne in place of Elizabeth (who was Protestant).Mary was Elizabeth’s cousin, her nearest living relative, and therefore had a strong claim to the English throne if anything were to happen to Elizabeth. Therefore, Elizabeth realized Mary had to go.Her spy chief, Walsingham, inveigled Mary into a Catholic plot to assassinate Elizabeth and make Mary queen of England.This was used as a pretext to try, convict, and execute Mary for treason, thus removing her as a potential alternative queen of England to Elizabeth.
