How Did Early California Indians Use Water?
Students examine illustrations on a poster to discover how California Indians used water. They investigate ways orange juice is currently distributed and examine ways early American Indians made their drinks. Students listen to a Yurok legend, “How Thunder and Earthquake Made Ocean,” and then write, illustrate, and share their own legends about water. Cooperative groups select a name associated with water. Using examples of American Indian art, each student designs and paints a symbol representing water. Lesson 11. How Do People Currently Use Water? Students brainstorm and categorize ways people use water. They list and compare the early California Indians’ uses of water to their own uses. Students read three stories about how people obtain water in villages found in different parts of the world and compare these to their own acquisition and uses of water.
