How did Constantine help Christianity gain a firm foothold in the Roman Empire?
Constantine reversed the effect of the Great Persecution, returning Church property and granting the faith state patronage. He gradually began the long process of persecuting paganism, while encouraging conversion to Christianity. By the time of his death, Christianity was still a minority religion, but under his sons and successors it had real power against a fatally weakened paganism.
