How did Charles Manson start his family?
Charles Manson started his family by befriending the younger generation in the counterculture. He believed himself to be a great philosopher and prophet. His philosophy included some of the Scientology teachings he learned when he was in prison previously. He began to gain followers, mostly female. He then started traveling with the beginnings of his family to gain additional recruits. Manson originally went to jail at 13. He was at a boy’s correctional facility for the next 4 years before escaping. He was sent back to a Federal Boys prison in the fall of 1951. He was in and out of prison again for the next 16 years. He was released on March 21, 1967. He had, at that time, spent more than half his life in some type of institution. The first known murder carried out by the Manson family was on July 25, 1969.
