How did Character Counts get started in Elmhurst?
Early conversation among Tom Borchert, City Manager. Tom Marcucci, Mayor, and Joel Morris Superintendent of District 205, established a mutual interest in exploring Character Counts as a city-wide initiative. Mr. Borchert also spoke with Rich Grodsky, Park District, Marilyn Boria, Elmhurst Public Library, Leo Fronza, Elmhurst Hospital, Bryan Cureton, Elmhurst College, Chris Tointon, YMCA and Michael Toburen, Pastor. In a January 23, 2003 memo to the Mayor and City Council, Mr. Borchert indicated that there appeared to be widespread intergovernmental, institutional, faith community, and not-for-profit support for the endeavor. Steve Neubauer, Police Chief, Jim Doherty, Deputy Chief, and Cheryl Kopecky, Assistant Superintendent at District 205, organized an infonnational meeting on May 7, 2003 inviting individuals in the community who were active in making Elmhurst a wonderful place to live.
