How did Captain Cook, the discoverer of the Hawaiian Islands determine latitude and longitude?
Longitude was diificult to determine and they had to encourage research into the best way to determine longitude which required knowing the correct time and observing the lunar position then. There was a special board of Longitude which assessed proposals. They had produced a nautical almanac as reference. They also developed a seagoing chronometer (which Cook used) as their timepieces then used a pendulum which would be unbalanced by sea action. In London at the Maritime Museum in Greenwich they have displays on this.
