Well, there were three candidates who got more than 10% of the vote in that election: Arnold, Cruz Bustamante and Tom McClintock. Many of the ideas Arnold campaigned on he stole from McClintock … McClintock was a leader in the fight to stop the car tax from years earlier. Cruz Bustamante was a member of the radical left who never renounced his ties to Mecha, a college-based “Chicano” activist group that thinks the Southwest should secede from the US and be ethnically cleansed of non-Hispanics. Many, many people were worried about splitting the Republican vote between McClintock and Arnold — they were afraid that if they voted for McClintock they’d get the candidate they least wanted: Bustamante. There was an internal McClintock poll that found half of Arnold’s voters really wanted to vote for McClintock but were voting for the candidate that they thought had the best chance of winning.
