How did British colonization in Singapore affect the Malays in the 19th Century?
Hi hi, First of all, Singapore was an Island belong to Malay Kingdom of Johore. It was Riffles that purchase it from Johore Imperial court. The Malay don’t migrant to Singapore, it was the Chinese, the white and the Indian. Some Indonesian (from Bugis, that is why there is a place call bugis in Singapore) do sailed to Singapore for trading, but they have been coming since Majapathit’s time. Chinese came to Singapore in 3 waves. 1st been the farmer, perhaps from the decendence of the Hang Li Pao, one of the Ming Dynasty’s princess. Second wave are from the businessman and Cooli (harbor labours) after the East India Company govern Singapore (1819). 3rd wave are the Mainland Chinese now, which is the same everywhere, be it in US, Toronto, Thailand or Australia.
