The decorations look sort of like flowers on this particular breastplate. My guess is that the decorations (which are common on the breastplates of horses) was actually a handle of some sort like trick riders use. The breastplate is attached to the saddle and very secure if the riggings are right. Please know that the reins could not be grabbed and pulled to get that kind
