How did avian influenza get to western Turkey from China?
The current outbreak of avian influenza, H5N1, was first detected in 1997 in Hong Kong. While aggressive measures were taken to contain it, notably the mass slaughter of chickens, wild birds act as a reservoir for the illness. When birds migrate, they carry the influenza virus with them and some time come into contact with farm poultry.
