How did AU become accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education?
AU first applied to be a candidate for accreditation in 2002. AU then undertook a comprehensive, 18-month self-study that examined every aspect of the institution’s programs, services, administration, governance, resources and educational outcomes in comparison with its mission, values and goals. Eleven teams consisting of AU staff, faculty and students conducted the self-study, which was reviewed by MSCHE in relation to its accreditation criteria. The process was very collegial, with MSCHE peers providing guidance and keeping in touch with AU on a regular basis, and it culminated with a week-long visit in March 2005 from representatives of peer institutions. The visiting team made a recommendation to the Commission in May. The Commission granted accreditation to AU in June.
