How did anglo saxon children develop?
Most children would have been expected to help out in whatever their parents occupation was when they were old enough. A lot of Saxons would have been farmers, tilling the land, growing crops, tending animals etc. Saxon boys would help with the ploughing , sowing, reaping, herding animals etc. Saxon girls would learn domestic skills, among the most important were spinning and weaving, since cloth production was very much regarded as women’s wrok in those days, in fact the word ‘wife’ comes from the anglo-saxon word for ‘weaver’. Making butter and cheese, brewing ale, and looking after the poultry were other tasks normally performed by women, girls would also help out with the animals and in the fields when it was necessary, everyone normally turned out to help with the harvest for instance.
