How did Angels acquire the attributes of intangible spiritual beings in modern culture?
There are so many different kinds of angels mentioned in the Bible… There are the thrones, the wheels, etc. Those mentioned in Genesis are the nephilim. Traditions goes that they took human form in order to ”marry” human women. The ones we usually see in artwork are archangels. The Greek gods had messengers that were similar in appearance to the archangels, and the Greeks had been painting pictures of them already, so when Christianity hit that area, Mercury and others morphed into Michael, Gabriel, etc. They’re more aesthetic than the seraphim or the cherubim, and more lovable, so we mostly stay with pictures or paintings of these Greek-ified archangels. There are still stories of ”angels in human form” helping people out that pop up from time to time, but we mostly think of the ones from popular art when we think of angels.
