How did all the catalog companies get my new address when I moved?
Presumably, when you moved, you submitted a change of address with the Post Office, right? Well, when someone sends a piece of mail, if they include the words “forwarding and address correction requestied” on the mailing address, and that address has a change of address on file, then not only is the mail forwarded to you, but a response is sent back to the sender containing your new address. The Post Office charges a fee to the sender for this service. To my knowledge, there is no way to request the PO dishonor these requests. As for your ex-husband’s mail, likely because the people sending the mail didn’t bother to notice that it was only you that moved, not him too. So when they got the response from the USPS saying “this person moved”, they simply changed all addresses on file with that address, regardless of the name.
