Abraham Lincoln led the United States through a very critical period. Constitutional issues centering upon “States Rights” needed to be resolved. The evolving federation of states required settlement of unifying questions. Agrarian southern states had starkly divergent interests from the industrializing northern states. So critical was this divide that southern states decided that secession would be in their best interest. The Confederate States of America would separate the young federation of United States into two separate countries. Two smaller countries would have fewer resources separately than the United States would have as one nation. President Lincoln’s challenge was to insure the survival of all the states by maintaining a unified whole. Most historians will acknowledge that the ensuing conflict or “Civil War” could have gone in either direction.
