Thief gets two months in Pogo Mine copper caper By Chris Freiberg Published Thursday, August 6, 2009 FAIRBANKS — A former Pogo Mine employee who stole more than $90,000 worth of copper and other items from the mine was sentenced to two months in jail Wednesday. Originally charged with first-degree theft, Simeon Staley, 27, pleaded guilty to a lesser count of second-degree theft earlier this year under a plea agreement with prosecutors. He was also put on probation for two years and will have to pay restitution to the mine along with co-defendant Mark Garwood, 45. The two-month sentence was the maximum amount of incarceration asked for by prosecutor Scott Mattern. “It started out with them just taking garbage, but the problem is that it’s Pogo’s garbage and it’s up to them what they want to do with it,” he said.
