The fifth-ranked Nittany Lions committed four turnovers and allowed a safety. A punt was blocked and returned for a touchdown, and they were ineffective on offense after a 79-yard scoring pass on their first play. The miscues added up and led to the Lions’ first loss of the year, a 21-10 defeat by the Hawkeyes in front of a soaked Beaver Stadium whiteout crowd of 109,316. This was a Penn State team not seen in three relatively easy wins against overmatched nonconference opponents. The Hawkeyes (4-0) rattled the Lions (3-1) with their defense, as their front four kept constant heat on a suddenly shaky Daryll Clark.
