Not a single academic, as far as we are aware, has raised a voice in protest at the treatment of American colleagues not even those Indian academics who have enjoyed the hospitality of US academic institutions. Democracy requires a questioning citizenry brought up on a liberal education. A liberal education gives citizens the ability to interrogate the claims of authority. It encourages citizens to explore moral and political questions from a variety of perspectives. In the words of the political philosopher Leo Strauss, Liberal education, which consists in the constant intercourse with the greatest minds, is a training in the highest form of modesty, not to say of humility.
