How deep do the roots grow on Canadian Hemlocks (Tsuga Canadensis)?
This is not a tap rooted plant. They probably do not go deeper than 24″ or so. They spread outwards more than downward. They will spread outward up to three times the diameter of the canopy. If it is old, they could go very far outwards. I am not sure what you are explaining. You should try to minimize root disturbance and there is no usefulness is purposefully digging up the roots. If you are trying to amend the soil for a tree that is already planted, top dress it with compost. it will gradually work its way down. Again, if you are working with a tree that has been in the gound: if the soil is so unsuitable that you think you need to amend or exchange the soil that is below the surface, that is hopeless. It will cause more harm than good and you simply can’t effectively improve soil in that way. Let the tree work it out for itself. It will adapt or not. Next time, select a tree that is suited to the existing soil. If you are planting the tree now: dig as far OUTWARD to improve the so
