how deadly was the raging tesoro fire?
Back in November, I reported that a Mexican restaurant called El Tesoro would be taking over the old Jake’s Ice Cream location at 129 Church Street. Well, since then I haven’t heard much and I can’t say I stroll down that part of Church all that often to check on progress. But this morning I came across a link to the restaurant’s website! Excited, I clicked over to it expecting all kinds of info. Instead all I got was the graphic above. There are “menu” and “bar” links on the main page but they just lead to blank pages. More than 120 firefighters have knocked down a blaze that erupted this morning at a Wilmington refinery. [Updated at 8:35 a.m.: At a new conference at the refinery, Los Angeles Fire Department Deputy Chief Mario Rueda said, “It appears we’ve successfully shut off the fuel.” “Over the last several hours we have continued to cool the refinery, we’ve developed a contingency plan in case the fire escaped,” Rueda said. “We’ve also established monitoring here, within the refinery, to make sure there’s no release of hazardous material.”] It started about 5 a.m. at the Tesoro Refinery in the 2100 block of East Pacific Coast Highway. No injuries were reported. Firefighters from the Los Angeles Fire Department worked with the on-site fire brigade to douse the flames. Twenty-three miles from downtown Los Angeles, the refinery spreads over 300 acres in the South Bay and has a workforce of around 500.
