How critical is density?
Density is calculated in pounds and the higher the rating the denser and firmer the pad. A mattress topper pad that is rated at fewer than 4 pounds is generally not considered desirable. However, it needs to be noted that not all 4 pound toppers will have exactly the same feel. A pad made by one maker could feel softer or firmer than a pad made by a different maker, even if they are rated as having the same density and firmness. The one sure approach to decide which one you’ll prefer is to lie on each. As a general rule of thumb, costlier mattress topper pads are denser and firmer than cheaper pads.
