How could you use a horseshoe magnet to find direction north?
http://www.eskom.co.za/education/schoolyard/funandgames/funandgames.html Hold the eye of the needle and stroke it gently about 6 times with the magnet. Remember to move the magnet in the same direction every time. Now repeat step (a) with another needle. Fold the strip of paper in half and sticky tape the needles down. The needles must both point the same way. Mark the eye end with an S and the sharp end with an N. Push the third needle into a lump of plasticine and balance the paper on the top so that it can swing. If you want to take the compass outside, hang the paper by a thread. Tie the thread to a pencil and drop the paper into a glass jar.
