How could the Arctic, climate change and geopolitics be interlinked?
Take a look at a world map, from a general point of view, the Arctic is a snow covered area in the northern hemisphere. However, a closer look at this white patch of landmass show us that it is the centre-point between the enormous land masses of the Americas, Europe and Eurasia. This closer look demonstrates the importance of the region from a strategic perspective. Today, we can see visible changes in the Arctic region as a result of the global warming. The rising global temperatures are causing the Arctic ice to melt and retreat, resulting in the rising of sea levels. The diminishing area of Arctic ice creates another problem, as it melts, it reflects less and less ultraviolet rays back into space which adds up to global warming. However, the melting of Arctic ice opens up many economic opportunities. The Arctic Ocean is home to vast oil and natural resources and strategically important shipping lanes.
