In order for our sun to reach a White Dwarf stage, it must pass through the Red Giant phase. At the moment, Sol is a “main sequence” star busily converting hydrogen to helium. It will do this for about 10 billion years. Once the hydrogen is gone, it will want to consume the helium to form carbon but it will not have the temperature or pressure required to make it happen. At this stage, the main sequence star starts to expand into a red giant. When Sol does this, it will expand in radius and consume all of the inner planets with earth in the process. Sol will eventually become a white dwarf, but the earth will not be around to witness it.
