How could catapults throw stones at a great distance?

The catapult threw the stones by the force of the weight on the opposite end. Just like in the cartoons when someone jumps on the end of a teeter totter and someone on the opposite end flies off. It took several men to load the boulders i n place and several men to crank the rope tight. Once locked in place as soon as the release was free the tension and weight would throw the stone. Check out this link.. http://www.catapults.info/ My son had to build one for school and it was so much fun. He made it too throw little bouncy balls. The class had fun that day shooting bouncy balls all over the classroom.
