How competitive is it to get into an internal medicine residency program?
Right now, internal medicine is considered not competitive, as most American medical graduates do not have a difficult time matching in internal medicine residency programs. Approximately 40 % of internal medicine residents are international medical graduates. Of course “top” internal medicine programs remain extremely competitive for students to match at. Students that match at top internal medicine programs often have AOA status, 230+ step I scores, and strong letters of recommendation.
