For example, beware the “Classical Instructor” who advocates Classical Training, i.e., Bel Canto (a time-honored technique for opera, European art songs, etc.) for every style of vocal literature including Broadway. Also, there are some self-styled vocal coaches who absolutely cannot teach you “how to sing” but serve primarily as an accompanist to already-informed singers who may need help with their phrasing or presentation. You must figure out your primary goals when considering private teachers. If it’s about pursuing a career in opera or other varieties of classical literature, then make sure your University has a reputation for turning out singers who then go onto associations with major opera companies.
