How compatible is a French, German, or Italian major with a major in vocal performance or musical theatre?
Answer Hello, Kelly Thank you for some great questions. The first thing to know is not all vocal instructors teach the same thing or in the same manner. For example, beware the “Classical Instructor” who advocates Classical Training, i.e., Bel Canto (a time-honored technique for opera, European art songs, etc.) for every style of vocal literature including Broadway. Also, there are some self-styled vocal coaches who absolutely cannot teach you “how to sing” but serve primarily as an accompanist to already-informed singers who may need help with their phrasing or presentation. You must figure out your primary goals when considering private teachers. If it’s about pursuing a career in opera or other varieties of classical literature, then make sure your University has a reputation for turning out singers who then go onto associations with major opera companies.
