How common were colossal statues in ancient civilisations?

Well, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world is said to be the Colossus of Rhodes. It was a statue of a man positioned with both legs on either side of a narrow passage exiting a harbor and ships would sail between his legs. It was huge enough that their masts didn’t touch. It’s not around anymore of course, but there are statues in Egypt of ancient pharaohs that were carved into the side of cliffs. They refer to them as statues, but it’s not freestanding, being chiseled into a rock wall.
