How Common Is Peyronies Disease?
Historically, Peyronie’s disease has been estimated to occur in as few as 1% of men but more recent studies have suggested that it is far more common with recent medical literature supporting incidences between 3-9%. The incidence depends on 2 major factors, the age of the patients being evaluated (it is more common in older men) and how conscientious a physician looks for the condition. Peyronie’s disease is defined by the presence of a plaque on the tunica albuginea of the penis. Simply asking man if he has penile deformity/curvature will invariably underestimate the incidence of the condition because many men with minimal curvature <15 degrees will not recognize that they have the condition and secondly many men who have erectile dysfunction do not generate enough penile rigidity to realize they have Peyronie's disease. Schwarzer et al conducted a questionnaire based study in Cologne. 8000 men were sent an inventory (age 30-80 years). 3 questions were previously validated on a subse
